Corrective Statements: Opportunities for Action

In 2006, a federal court ordered the major U.S. tobacco companies to publish “corrective statements” that tell the American public the truth about the health harms of smoking and secondhand smoke and the addictiveness of smoking and nicotine. These corrective statements were to be disseminated through newspaper and TV ads, cigarette packs, the companies’ websites and signs placed in retail stores that sell cigarettes.

After a long legal battle, the tobacco companies must finally place the corrective statement signs in about 220,000 stores across the U.S. The signs must be installed between July 1 and September 30, 2023, and will remain in stores until June 30, 2025. The signs will be in English and in Spanish in areas with significant Spanish-speaking populations.
